Do we practice what we preach, or are we all missing a trick?

So today I got to thinking. I spend my days reaching out to small businesses to help them improve their marketing efforts. As a marketing consultant I am here to objectively look at a clients’ business, see where they are performing well, where they could be performing better, and do my utmost to devise strategies, plans and activities that ensure they essentially, perform better in the future.

 

But can I say the same for my own business, and do I really ‘practice what I preach’? In honesty, I can’t say that I do. Do I absolutely love my company logo? No. Do I take time out to look at my competitors, analyse the market that I operate in, and understand where my business could be performing better? Now I know the answer to those questions should be yes, but I have to say I’d be lying, and I’m not sure that’s the idea of a blog now is it...

 

Now given that I’ve been a freelancer for only 6 months, maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on myself. Every business is born, learns and grows, and my own is no different. Yet this thought did make me think of other freelancers, marketers and small business owners. For example do all website developers spend as much time on their own website as they do their clients? Probably not. Do all copywriters have the most compelling bio in the world that it would make me have to get in touch with them to write mine? I’m not sure they do. And do all SEO experts appear in the number one spots on Google, Yahoo and Bing? Impossible.

 

The above got me thinking that it’s just as important to schedule time out to spend on your own business as it is helping others. So I now have a new project in my calendar, ‘marketing myself’, and I’ll let you know how it goes…
